LWS Newsflash - March 15, 2019

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

March Madness will be kicking off next week and with it we will be starting the 2019 Tournament of Books! This annual event is our spring celebration of books and reading and a great way to encourage reading over spring break. Here is how it works. Throughout the year students recommend their favorite books. Mrs. Hanrahan, our librarian, then narrows down the selections and identifies the 16 most popular picture books and 16 most popular chapter books. We have set up our tournament bracket with the picture books on one side and the chapter books on the other. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday students will vote on their favorite in each pairing with the winners moving on to the next round. We will narrow our list of 32 books down to the Elite Eight by the end of the week, with the winner being selected after break.

If you are looking for some quality books to share with your children, check out the Tournament of Books list HERE. (City of Ember, Gregor the Overlander, Creepy Pair of Underwear, and Mother Bruce are some of my personal favorites!)

A big thanks to Mr. Melvin who played his bagpipes for us in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.

K-KIDS BOOK SWAP

K-Kids will be having a new activity next week, a book swap. Students thought this would be a fun activity to do prior to break with the concept that all students would be able to have a new book to read over spring vacation. Mrs. Hanrahan has been so thoughtful to let us use her classroom, the LRC on Thursday for this event.

On Monday and Tuesday, we are asking students to bring in any books (fiction, non-fiction) that they’d like to donate for this event. Collection boxes will be in your student’s grade level pods. At the time a student makes a donation, students will receive a slip that will say Good for ____books. Students will then hold on to this slip for usage later in the week at the swap.

There is no limit on the amount of books students may donate, but there is a cap on the number of books students will receive at the swap which is 5. Your child’s slip will indicate how many they are eligible for.
